Plai Laem, and why not Chaweng

Every part of Koh Samui is fifteen minutes from every other part, which makes the choice of where to buy sound less important than it is. It is not. Here are the distances, measured rather than described.

The numbers

From the resort gate, in a straight line: Choeng Mon beach 0.8 km, Legacy Spa 0.8 km, Wat Phra Yai and the Big Buddha 1.8 km, Samui airport 2.7 km, Chaweng 4.6 km, the Samui Elephant Sanctuary 4.7 km, Fisherman’s Village at Bo Phut 5.0 km. These are straight-line distances taken from the map on the Location page; by road each is longer, and on this island the road is what you drive.

What 4.6 km buys you

Chaweng is where the island’s nightlife, its traffic and most of its rental demand are. Four and a half kilometres is close enough to be there in ten minutes on the evenings you want it, and far enough that no part of it reaches you on the evenings you do not. That is the whole argument for this cape, and it is the difference between a house you use and a house you let.

The airport, which matters more than it sounds

Samui airport is 2.7 km away. For an owner that is the difference between a weekend being worth the flight and not; for a managed rental it is the single strongest predictor of how short a stay a guest will book. Short stays are what fill a calendar. A villa forty minutes from the runway loses the two-night bookings entirely, and those are the ones that pay in the low season.

And the quiet part

Choeng Mon, 800 metres from the gate, is a bay rather than a strip: shallow, sheltered, and the beach people on this coast actually walk to. Legacy Spa is the same distance in the other direction. Wat Phra Yai is under two kilometres. Nothing on that list is a day trip, which is the point — the things you would travel for elsewhere on Samui are, from here, an evening.
